Notes : No subspecies known. Sometimes known as B. praetextatus.

Identification
Large toad species reaching up to 17 cm in length. Robust body, triangular head and forehead almost as long as hindlegs. Coloration is brown to beige with black lines (edged with white) on flanks and belly. Lips often white-edged.

Range and habitat
The species is endemic to Japan and occurs on the islands of Kyushu, Shikoku, Honshu and southern Hokkaido. Lives in wide variety of habitats, from mountains to coastal areas.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species is locally common but suffers from urbanization of of Japan which leads to local declines through habitat loss and pollution.
