Classification

Notes : No subspecies known. The species is sometimes treated as a synonym of B. variegata.

Identification
Adults can grow to about 5 cm in length. Skin is warty and snout is rounded. Very compact body. Back and flanks are dark tan to greyish-brown with faint clear spots. Underside is blackish-blue with large bright yellow-orange blotches.

Range and habitat
The species is found in Europe and is endemic to Italy, occurring in the Appenine area, south of the Po valley and south to southern tip of Italy. Lives in shallow pools and ponds is open forests and pasturelands, to 1700 m.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species is threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation within its small range. It is believed that chytridiomycosis is also a threat to this species.
