Identification
Adults can reach a maximum size of 20 cm, female being bigger than males. Flipper-like hindlimbs. Body and head flattened, head triangular in shape with very small eyes. Coloration usually dark gray to brown.
Range and habitat
The species is found in the Amazon basin in South America, from Colombia to Guianas, south to Brazil and Bolivia. Lives in ponds, swamps with muddy or sandy bottoms, below 400 m.

Status : The species has a wide range and remains locally common. Vulnerable to habitat destruction and degradation.
