Identification
Very large aquatic frog reaching up to 10 cm in length (females much larger than males). Huge head with small eyes and huge mouth, making for one third of the body. Coloration olive-green to grey with faint spotting and mottling. Flat body.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Chaco region of South America, from northern Argentina to south-eastern Bolivia and Paraguay. Lives in dry and wet chaco areas with temporary or artificial ponds, to 200 m.

Status : The species is still considered common but habitat degradation (fires, agriculture expansion) and introduction of alien predators are causes of decline.
