Identification
Adults can reach a size of 59 cm for a weight of 860 g. Head and throat white with grey-brown cap and rufous to brown band from eye to neck. Breast white with brown spots. Wings and back dark brown to grey with black streaks.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in most coastal regions of Australia except south central parts, also found in central Australia and extreme south New Guinea. Mostly found in open forest and woodlands or tall grassland, rarely marshes.

Status : The species is globally secure and widespread but local declines are reported because of habitat change, habitat fragmentation and predation by foxes.
