Identification
The species reaches 43 cm in length for a weight of 275 g. Wings, back, thighs and tail dark blue with slight purple tinge. Head mostly violet-black with long white line on cheeks and white patch in front of eye. Red eye-ring, dark red bill.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in eastern Africa, in most of central and south Kenya, extending in north Tanzania and east Uganda. Lives in mountain evergreen forests and suburban gardens, from 1500 to 3200 m.

Status : The species can be locally abundant within its range. The Tanzanian population has suffered from overtrapping for the trade.
