Identification
Adults can reach a total length of 26 cm for a weight of 57 g. Black wings with fine white stripes. White undertail. Back and uppertail brown. Lower breast and belly yellow with white collar. Head and breast are grey (females) or yellow. Subspecies with olive-yellow upper breast for male, greyer breast for female.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in South-east Asia, from South China and northern Thailand to central Malaysia, Sumatra, north-central Borneo and Java. Subspecies occurs from south Thailand to Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. Lives mostly in primary rainforests, bamboo forests, open dry forests, to 1200 m.

Status : The species is rarely common, even in suitable habitats. Its tolerance for disturbed forest makes it less likely to be threatened soon.
