Identification
Adults can reach a length of 14 cm for a weight of 8.5 grams. Large humming bird with long black wings and straight black bill. Plumage entirely metallic green with dark blue belly and blue to violet-purple cheek patch.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in South America, from mountains of north-west Venezuela to Bolivia, north Chile and north-west Argentina. Also in south Venezuela. Lives in open woodlands, plantations and forest edges, from 1700 to 4500 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is common within its large range and often seen in man-made habitats, including cities. Not known to face any current threats.
