Identification
Adults can reach a length of 45 cm for a weight of 460 g. Fairly long banded tail. Most plumage is dark slaty grey. Beige-rufous band on sides of head. Breast is white to rufous, rufous lower belly, slate-grey upper belly. Subspecies with extensive and complete black breast band, tawny belly.

Range and habitat
The species occurs patchily from North Mexico to Guatemala, from Panama to Colombia, east to Guianas, from Brazil to south Argentina. Subspecies found from north Mexico to Guatemala. Lives in grasslands, savannas, forest edges and cactus deserts, up to 4600 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is fairly common and its range could be increasing because of deforestation. Human disturbances can be source of trouble.
