Identification
The species grows to 71 cm in length for a weight of 2,5 kg. Plumage uniformly black-brown to nearly black. Dark eyes, no visible eye-ring. Black bill with yellow cere. Yellow feet with black claws. Nostrils circular, large bill.
Range and habitat
The species occurs patchily in eastern Europe and breeds mostly in central-northern Asia, in north China and Russia. Winters in south Europe and Asia mostly. Lives in large tracts of wet forests near wetlands, wet grasslands and estuaries.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is declining at an alarming rate because of the deforestation of lowland forests and areas near rivers. Persecution and illegal hunting are major threats too.
