Identification
Adults can reach a body length of 48 cm for a wingspan of 110 cm and a weight of 433 g. Grey head with white forehead and supercillium. White throat with black stripe. Brown back and tail. Throat rufous, belly with white and rufous barring.
Range and habitat
The species breeds in western and north-western China, Japan and Izu islands. Winters in Philippines and south-east Asia to western Indonesia. Lives in wooded areas near open terrain with water, often in hilly terrain.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species can still be found in large numbers but some populations in north China and Russia are affected by hunting and habitat loss.
