Identification
Adults can reach 30 cm in length for a weight of nearly 200 g, females being heavier than males. Male is dark grey with reddish bands (sometimes fully red) on breast and flanks. Females is dark brown with brown bands on breast and belly.
Range and habitat
The species breeds in South-east Russia, north-east China, Korea and Japan. It winters in South-east China, Philippines, west Indonesia and Malaysia. Subspecies breeds in Japan and winters in Philippines. Lives mostly in lowland forests. When migrating, found in more open country.

Status : The species’ status in the wild is poorly known. It is thought to remain at least common but it has been declining in Japan and this could get worse.
