Identification
The species grows to 25 cm long for a weight of 120 g. Head, breast and nape brown-grey, black lores and eye-ring. Dull brown mantle and tail, light green belly with yellow flecks. Female’s breast brown, male’s breast bright orange. Black bill.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in eastern Africa, from central and eastern Ethiopia to Somalia and south to north Tanzania. Lives in lowland shortgrass savanna and dry countries with trees, to 2000 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is globally uncommon but can be locally common, especially in protected areas. No imminent threats are known so far.
