Identification
The species reaches 29 cm for a weight of 293 g. Plumage mostly dark green with black edges to head feathers and white flecks on top of head. Red undertail, blue throat patch. Subspecies darker with reddish-purple patch on chest.

Range and habitat
Subspecies found from Bolivia to Paraguay and south Brazil. Species occurs from western Brazil to Bolivia, Peru and north Argentina. Lives in forests, open woodlands and scrub woodland, to 2000 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is still common in parts of its range except in the north. It has been traded heavily from Argentina. Numbers caught are still high.
