Identification
Adults can reach 26 cm long for a weight of 229 g. Dark grey-brown head, wings and back. Purple-violet flight feathers, red undertail, belly brown with pink-tinge and dark mottling. White streaks on cheeks, red lores. Black and beige bill.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in South American from northeast Venezuela to the Guianas and north Brazil. Isolated population in northeast Colombia. Lives in humid tropical evergreen forests and savanna woodlands, to 600 m.

CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is still common in protected areas but has declined in Brazil because of intense deforestation. Rarely caught for trade.
