Identification
Adults can reach 36 cm in length for a weight of 300 g. Back, wings, thighs and tail green. Breast and belly bright red with blue edges on each feathers. Conspicuous blue and red crest. Subspecies darker with browner head and forehead.

Range and habitat
Subspecies occurs in central, south Brazil, north Peru and Bolivia. Species also found from Colombia and north Peru to Venezuela, Guianas and North Brazil. Lives in undisturbed forests, coastal sand-ridge forest, gallery and savanna forests.

Status : The species is fairly common in most of its range although local declines attributed to deforestation and over-trapping could occur.
