Identification
Adults reach a length of 89 cm for a weight of 1.5 kg. Bill horn-colored and black, white skin on cheeks. Plumage scarlet red with blue flight feathers. This subspecies is smaller and has various amounts of green on wings, rarely blue tips.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from Costa Rica to North-east Bolivia and central Brazil. Species also occurs from south-east Mexico to Nicaragua. Lives in humid areas, forests, woodlands, often near rivers, up to 1000 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species is locally common in its range. Subspecies cyanopterus is critically endangered because of overtrapping and habitat destruction.
