Identification
Adults reach a length of 89 cm for a weight of 1.5 kg. Bill horn-colored and black, white skin on cheeks. Plumage scarlet red with blue flight feathers. This subspecies is larger and has yellow on upper wings with each feathers tipped blue.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from south-east Mexico to Nicaragua. Species also occurs from Costa Rica to North-east Bolivia and central Brazil. Lives in humid areas, forests, woodlands, often near rivers, up to 1000 m.

Status : The species is locally common in its range. Subspecies cyanopterus is critically endangered because of overtrapping and habitat destruction.
