Identification
One of the biggest macaw species reaching 95 cm in length and a weight of 1.7 kg. Huge horn-colored and black bill. Tail red and blue, wings red, green and blue. Rest of plumage is red, much darker than similar species A. macao.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, from east Panama to Guianas and central-east Brazil, south to east Peru and north-east Bolivia. Lives in humid lowland and hilly forests, also caatinga and gallery forest, to 1500 m.

Status : The species is widespread but uncommon and declining steeply in many areas because of overtrapping for the trade and habitat loss.
