Identification
Adults can grow to 26 cm in length, weight unknown. Unmistakable. Reddish-orange bill, dark blue head. Very extensive bright yellow nape patch. Dark violet breast and belly with more or less numerous dark red stripes on breast.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in Australasia and is endemic to Biak and Superiori islands, off north-west New Guinea, in Geelvink Bay. Lives in lowland forests, second growth and plantations.
Conservation
IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is endemic to two small islands and its populations are declining (particularly on Biak) because of deforestation. Also trapped for trade.
