Identification
Large head and bill, long tail. Female has black bill, male with red upper mandible. Plumage dark green, violet-blue breast, brighter blue head with thick black band on chin and forehead.
Range and habitat
South China (from southeast Tibet) to west Yunnan and nearby extreme northeast India. Found in mixed forests, alpine thickets and cultivated valleys, up to 4000 m.

IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED
CITES : Appendix II
Status : At least locally common and often occurs in large flocks. Its range has been little studied. Not traded in large numbers these days, well represented and bred in aviculture.
