Identification
The species grows to 33 cm in length for a weight of 260 g. Black cap, yellow eyes, dark orange bill, green wings. Rest of plumage bright red and dark blue. Subspecies with red breast, bluish-black nape, dark transversal band on lower breast.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in north-east New Guinea. Species found from West Papuan Islands to most of New Guinea (except central mountains). Lives in lowland and hill forests, freshwater swamps, to 1600 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : This species has a large range and, although uncommon in the wild, remains safe and one of the commonest big lories within its range.
