Identification
Adults reach a maximum length of 63 cm for a weight of 680 g. Big head with a very wide gape and small crest above bill. Coloration usually gray with fine vermiculations, stripes, spots. Wings darker, with brown tinge.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in most of Australia except arid areas without trees. Also found on Tasmania. Lives in woodlands, wooded grasslands, shrublands with trees, gardens.

Status : This species remains globally common throughout its range. It adapts very well to partially cleared forests and agricultural areas if trees remain.
