Identification
The species can reach 23 cm for a weight of 79 g. Male has white breast and belly, brown cap, back, wings and tail, brown patches on flight feathers, metallic blue, green to purple iridescent spots. White face and chin. Female duller.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in sub-Saharan Africa, from Sierra Leone to DR Congo and south Ethiopia, southwards to north Angola and South Africa. Lives in deep montane and lowland forests, gallery forests, up to 2000 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species is widespread and locally common. It is threatened by deforestation in parts of its range.
