Identification
Adults can reach a length of 42 cm for a weight of 510 g. Grey bill with black tip, Grey legs. Pure white (sometimes yellow-tinged) plumage except from black wing feathers (primaries) and tail. Dark eyes.

Range and habitat
The subspecies occurs in south-east Asia coastal areas, from Myanmar and Andaman Islands to western Indonesia and Philippines. Species also found in eastern Indonesia and north-west New Guinea. Lives in mangroves, coastal forests and coconut plantations, up to 1100 meters.

Status : The species has a large range but is highly vulnerable to hunting and disturbance on its breeding grounds. Some populations are close to extinction.
