Identification
Adults can reach a length of 18 cm for a weight of 50 g. Bill is dark orange-red with black tip. Plumage mostly beige-brown with darker wings featuring black spots. Nape and breast with dark edging giving scaly look.
Range and habitat
This species occurs from South USA (South California and South Carolina), to most of central America, south to east Brazil and Ecuador. Lives in arid and semi-arid scrublands, grasslands and farmland, up to 2900 m.

Status : The species is common to abundant in most of its range. It may have benefited from human activities as it can occur in disturbed habitats.
