Identification
Adults can grow to 19 cm in length for a weight of 68 g. Black wings, back, face and tail with faint white barring on wings. Beige throat, breast and belly with faint dark barring on belly. Yellow forehead, bright red nape and crown (for male).
Range and habitat
The species occurs in Central America and northern south America, from extreme south Mexico to eastern and north-eastern Colombia and Ecuador. Lives in humid forests, clearings, old plantations and gardens, up to 1500 m.

Status : The species remains relatively common and occurs in many protected areas. Local declines are noted because of extensive deforestation.
