Identification
The species reaches 48 cm in length for a weight of 400 grams. Unmistakable toucan with relatively short green bill with black base. Red eyering. Sides of head and breast orange-yellow, lower breast red. Rest of plumage black.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South-America, from south and south-east Brazil to eastern Paraguay and extreme north Argentina. Lives in montane and foothills forests and secondary growth, up to 2070 m.

Status : The species apparently remains common but could be declining locally because of loss of habitat. It is still occasionally hunted and caught for trade.
