Identification
Adults can reach a body length of 16 cm for a weight of 45 g. Large yellow bill, green wings and tail, white and green flanks and belly. Male has red head and breast, female’s head is bluish, brown and yellow, yellow and orange breast. Subspecies with red merging into bright orange lower breast and then yellow belly. Female with greener throat and narrow blue frontal band.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in Central and South America, from Costa Rica and Panama to Colombia, Western Venezuela and south to North Peru. Subspecies found in east Andes of Ecuador and northern Peru. Lives in primary forests, near rocky ridges, trails and clearings, from 400 to 2400 m.

Status : The species is very local and its range is fragmented. It is only locally common, although often overlooked, and occurs in protected areas.
