Identification
Adults can reach 16 cm in length for a weight of 66 g. Fairly short and thick silvery-grey bill. Plumage black with white area on crown. Flanks are cream with black spots. Males have cream throat with yellow band. Black throat for female. Subspecies with flank patch more orange, even red. Crown whiter.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in central America from central and western Panama to north-west Colombia. Lives in wet primary lowland forests, rarely secondary forests, to 1200 m.

Status : The species is globally uncommon to fairly common. It’s entirely dependant on forests and is probably highly vulnerable to deforestation.
