Identification
Adults can reach 15 cm in length for a weight of 28 g. Small round body, short bright red bill. Plumage is mostly grey, lighter on belly. Top and sides of head are olive green, throat is bright yellow and orange. Yellow and orange wings.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in eastern Asia (patchily) from northern India and Nepal to most of south and east China. Lives in open forests, shrublands, in thick undergrowth, up to 3400 meters.

Status : The species has a large range and has been widely introduced. Some populations are endangered to extinct because of overcollection for trade.
