Identification
The species grows to 23 cm in length for a weight of 69 g. Dirty yellow bill, , no visible eyering. Male is grey with rufous flanks and lower breast, white belly. Female is browner with more extensive rufous areas and black spotting on breast.

Range and habitat
This species breeds in south-east Russia, north-east China and Korea. It winters in south-east China and nearby north-east Vietnam. Lives in dense and open forests, second growth, often near streams, to 1100 m.
