Identification
Short but very thick silvery bill. Female brown with brown bill. Male black with dark blue tinge to flanks and sides of head. White line under eye and wing patch. White lower breast and belly.
Range and habitat
Andes mountains from western Venezuela through Colombia to Bolivia. Found in grassy areas near forests, roadside pastures and shrubby areas, from 300 to 3100 m.

Status : The species has a very large range but a rather patchy distribution. It can be locally very common and expanding where deforestation occurs at small scales.
