Identification
Adults can reach up to 10 cm in length for a weight of 17.8 g. Thick and short grey bill with black tip. Male has bright yellow forehead patch, chin, throat, flanks and belly. Rest of plumage dark blue to violet. Female dull green.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in Central America, from north-east Mexico to Yucatan Peninsula, south to Caribbean and Pacific slopes of Costa Rica and west Panama. Lives in second growth, forest edges and clearings, plantations, to 2100 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species remains locally abundant in its range, especially in protected areas. It isn’t known to face any threats despite increasing deforestation.
