Identification
This species reaches a maximum length of 10 cm for a weight of 14 g. Long black bill, up to 2.3 cm long. Male dark purple-blue with black wings, throat and mask. Female green with streaked belly and beige face. Yellow legs.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in South America, from extreme east Panama to Guianas and Brazil (Amazon river basin), south to west-central Brazil and Bolivia. Subspecies found form south Panama to Guianas and Amazonian Brazil. Lives in the canopy of humid forests and open woodlands, up to 1800 m.
