Identification
This species reaches a length of 13 cm for a weight of 19 g. Female entirely bright green with yellow throat. Male has black head, black and yellow bill. Rest of plumage is bright green-blue to deep turquoise blue according to subspecies. Subspecies very turquoise with strong blue tinge for males.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in Central and South America, from south Mexico and Guatemala to Colombia, south to Bolivia, east to central and eastern Brazil. Subspecies found from Colombia to Bolivia, east to Mato Grosso state in Brazil. Lives in lowland and foothills humid forest and forest edges.

Status : The species remains common in most of its range and occurs in many protected areas. East Brazil population could be at risk from habitat loss.
