Identification
Adults can reach 25 cm in length for a weight of 100 g. Plumage mostly blackish to dark grey-black, darker on head and wings with white patch on flight feathers. Small black crest on forehead. Entirely yellow bill, yellow legs.

Range and habitat
The species is endemic to the Indonesian islands of Java and Bali. It has been introduced in Malaysia, Singapore and other islands in Indonesia. Lives in flooded grassy areas, cultivated areas, gardens in cities.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species is common within its very small range. Introduced populations are expanding and the species is considered as a pest in most countries.
