Identification
The species can reach 28 cm in length for a weight of 48 g. Both sexes look similar. Long tail, small black bill. Most plumage is grey, darker on wings and tail with white lines on wings. Darker lores. White to light beige flanks and belly. Darker subspecies with limited white markings on wings.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in North America, from southern Canada to most of USA, south to northern Mexico and from Bahamas to greater Antilles. Subspecies found from Central and eastern Canada to north Mexico. Lives in open vegetation areas including woodlands, parkland and cities.

Status : The species is very common and widespread. It is very adaptable and has colonized new areas because of vegetation and forest clearing.
