Identification
The species reaches 21,5 cm for a weight of 55 g. Strong black bill, bright yellow eyes. Coloration mostly black with shiny dark violet iridescence. Vent is dull beige-yellow. Throat, breast and belly bright dark red.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in north-central Africa, from north Cameroon to Sudan and western Ethiopia, south to north Tanzania and south-east DR Congo. Lives in bushy grasslands, thornbush, usually near lakes and rivers, to 1500 m.

Status : The species seems to be facing no important threats at this time. It is locally abundant and very adaptable, sometimes found in or near big cities.
