Identification
The species can reach 16 cm in length for a weight of 19 g. Straight black bill, black feet. Plumage is dark greyish-olive on back, sides of head and nape. Dark erectile feathers on forehead and crown. Black and white wings, black tail.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in North America, it breeds in most of Canada, except extreme north and east of USA. Winters in coastal eastern USA and Mexico. Lives in open woodlands, clearings and forest edges, often near water, to 2500 m.

Status : The species thrives in man-made habitats but can be negatively impacted by loss of natural habitat. Rough winters also have negative effects.
