Identification
The species grows to 12 cm in length for a weight of 18 g. Cone-shaped bill, plumage globally dull greenish-yellow with streaks on belly (and on most of body for females). Males have black cap and chin, yellow breast and cheeks.

Range and habitat
This species lives in most of Europe and middle east, then patchily in northern Central Asia and in most of south-east Russia and China. Mostly found in boreal and temperate conifer forests, to about 2000 m.

Status : The species is locally common to abundant and its range is likely to increase with the maturing of conifer plantations around Europe and Asia.
