Identification
Adults can reach 13.5 cm in length for a weight of 19 g. Elongated central tail feathers. Male is black with turquoise blue patch on upper wings and back, bright red crown. Female is mostly green with yellow belly.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in South America, from extreme south-west Costa Rica to north Colombia and North Venezuela. Lives in dry and humid woodlands with thick lower growth, to 1700 meters.

Status : The species is fairly common to locally common in most of its range. It can tolerate slight degradations in its habitat and occurs in protected areas.
