Identification
Adults can grow to 33 cm in length for a weight of 114 g. Unmistakable. Very long erect crest, plumage mostly dark grey to black. Conspicuous white patches on neck and on sides of eyes. All black subspecies with clear eyes.

Range and habitat
This subspecies is endemic to Java. Species found in southern Thailand and Malaysia, on Sumatra, Borneo and Java. Lives in lowland and hill broadleaf forests, up to 1800 m.

Status : The species is getting rarer because of deforestation and capture for the trade. This subspecies is nearly extinct in the wild because of the trade.
