Identification
Adults can reach 24 cm in length for a weight of 77 g. Very thick conical grey bill. Male has black wings with white markings and rest of plumage bright yellow. Female is duller with brown streaks on head, back and wings. Subspecies with fully black back.

Range and habitat
Subspecies found in the Andes from southwest Colombia to south Peru. Species also found in north Colombia and north Venezuela. Lives in tropical deciduous and thorn forests, also scrublands, to 3500 meters.

Status : The species seems to be common to abundant in most of its range. Caught occasionally for cagebird trade.
