Identification
Up to 21 cm in length, weight of 44 g. Has distinctive heavy but short yellow bill. Male is grey with red face, breast, belly and tail. Female is brown. Both sexes have a reddish crest. Subspecies vary with amount and shade of red color on face and breast.
Range and habitat
This species is found in South Texas and New Mexico, south to East Mexico. westwards in South Arizona, north West Mexico and Baja California.

Status : The species remains fairly common and can occur in high densities around Arizona and Texas, slightly rarer in Mexico.
