Identification
Unmistakable, very long curved black bill, red legs. Male black with strong purple violet iridescence. Bright yellow feather tufts on belly and flanks, tail feathers wire-like. Female streaked brown.

Range and habitat
North and south New Guinea, including Vogelkop Peninsula and west Papuan islands. Found in flat lowland rainforests and swamp forests with sago palms and pandanus, to 180 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : This species is very poorly known in the wild and its habitat is largely inaccessible. So far, is seems to be safe and very rarely caught for the trade but monitoring and research are needed.
