Identification
Female all greyish-brown with red tinge on belly. Male has golden head and nape, forming thin collar, iridescent green cheeks, black breast, dark red flank plumes. Brightest subspecies.
Range and habitat
The species is endemic to Papua New Guinea and occurs in most of the south two-thirds of the country. Subspecies found in Southeast New Guinea, from Cloudy bay to Milne bay and Cape Vogel. Lives in lowland and hill forests, second growth and gardens, to 1500 meters.

Status : The species remains common to locally abundant despite years of hunting of males by local tribes. Poaching and wildlife trade are possible threats.
