Identification
Grey and rufous-brown morphs, black edged face, buff eyebrows, forehead and ear-tufts, dark brown crown. Wings densely marked with black and buff spots, belly with faint black streaks.
Range and habitat
Subspecies found in south Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Bali. Occurs in second-growth forests, forest edges, plantations and gardens with scattered trees, to 2400 m.

Status : Very adaptable species, often found near human settlements and having clearly benefited from deforestation. The most common owl species in Greater Sundas.
