Identification
Adults can reach 58 cm in length for a weight of 1,3 kg. Bushy but short horizontal ear-tufts. Facial disk brown with white throat. Rest of plumage brown with heavy dark streaking on breast and belly. Diagonal clear band on upper wings.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from east Myanmar to south China and to north Peninsular Malaysia. Species also found in India, Sri Lanka and south Turkey to Iran. Lives in open evergreen woodlands, swamps and old plantations, to 2000 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is widespread but quite local and vulnerable to habitat loss. Subspecies semenowi from Turkey to Iran is likely highly threatened.
