Identification
Adults can reach 43 cm in length, weight unknown. Head and breast rufous-brown with black streaking. Wings and back rufous brown with brown spotting, belly white with black streaks. This subspecies is darker and larger on average.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in eastern and southern Philippines, on Samar, Leyte, Bohol and Mindanao. Species also found on Luzon and Catanduanes. Lives in lowland and lower montane forests and forest edges, to 1170 m.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species has suffered from habitat loss throughout its range and this is still the case today. Locally threatened by hunting and capture for trade.
